About Caprese Sandwich

The caprese sandwich takes the components of the famous Campanian salad, mozzarella, tomato, and basil, and moves them into a crusty roll for lunch. It keeps the same trinity and the same reliance on good ingredients, but the bread changes the character entirely: a split baguette drizzled with olive oil and layered with thick rounds of tomato and mozzarella, torn basil, and a few drops of balsamic. Salting the tomato slices directly on the board is a small but useful step, seasoning them and drawing out just enough juice to soak lightly into the bread without turning it soggy.

The finished sandwich is fresh and creamy with bright pops of tomato and the sweet-tart edge of balsamic, the soft mozzarella held together by a chewy, crusty crumb. It's ideal picnic and packed-lunch food, sturdy enough to travel and best after it has had a few minutes for the flavors to settle. The one deliberate move that lifts it is pressing the whole thing down hard with your palm before cutting, which compacts the layers, drives the oil and juices into the bread, and turns a loose stack of ingredients into a single cohesive bite. At around ten minutes with no cooking, it's about as fast as a real meal gets.
