About Orange Creamsicle Soda

The Orange Creamsicle Soda is a "dirty soda" — the Utah-born habit of dressing up ordinary fizzy soda with syrup and a splash of cream. This version chases the flavor of the orange-and-vanilla ice cream bars sold off summer trucks, building it in a glass instead of a freezer. Orange soda supplies the bright, tangy citrus fizz; a measure of vanilla syrup rounds off the sharp edges and adds that unmistakable creamsicle warmth; and half-and-half poured over the back of a spoon ribbons down through the drink to give it a soft, dessert-like body.

The pleasure here is textural as much as it is about taste: the top stays creamy and cool while the soda underneath keeps its bite, and each sip pulls both together. A crown of whipped cream makes it read as a proper float without any of the melting or scooping. It comes together in about four minutes with nothing to cook, which makes it a good answer for a hot afternoon, a kid's treat, or a no-alcohol option at a cookout. Serve it tall over plenty of ice with a straw, and stir gently before the first sip if you want the cream fully swirled through.
